A Note from Double Emmy Winner Kathy Griffin

Hi -

It’s me, Kathy Griffin!

I know you’re thinking to yourself, how can Kathy Griffin take time away from her incredibly busy schedule and preparations to host the Emmy Awards to contact me directly? Or maybe you’ve turned off Twitter and hadn’t heard. Yes, I’m hosting the Emmys!  Actually, it’s the Schmemmys– the “Creative Arts Emmys” taped a week before the real show, but this is still a big deal, people!

Kathy Griffin canvasses with VFEAnyway, you know I love my gays, which is why I’m writing to you. My assistant Tiffany and I, along with some volunteers from the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center’s Vote for Equality Project, recently spent a whole day knocking on the doors of voters in Pasadena, engaging them in conversations about marriage equality.

We had lots of… let’s say, “interesting” encounters (you can watch some of them on my double Emmy-winning show tonight on Bravo), but my favorite was when we stopped at the home of 90-year-old Frances, who was knitting on her porch when we walked up her driveway.  We met the real little old lady from Pasadena!

Frances told us, like many of the folks we met, that she voted for Prop 8 (against gay marriage) because of her religious views.  We chatted for a while… I think she finished her scarf while we were there… but before we left, she said she’ll vote differently next time!

What I learned is that even people my mom’s age (who aren’t finishing a box of wine) can change their mind if we reach out to them and share personal stories about why it’s wrong to deny same-sex couples the freedom to marry.  That’s why I hope you’ll join me and sign-up to volunteer with the Center’s Vote for Equality Project.

You can sign-up to do door-to-door canvassing like we did, or help build a bigger team of volunteers at phone banks.  Whatever you do, the Center will provide all the training and assistance you need—even if you’ve never done something like this.  I know firsthand what a difference this work makes and hope you’ll volunteer.

The next voter canvass is on Saturday, August 15th.  Please sign-up now—we need to talk to a lot more voters like Frances!

Much love,

Kathy

P.S. How about donating a few bucks to support this program?  I’ve given and raised a lot of money for the Center because they do such great work.  The gays have always been there for me—I’ll always be there for them.  I hope you’ll be there to support the Center’s work for marriage equality.

P.P.S. See a preview of my canvassing adventure here.
