In this video, LA Gay & Lesbian Center CEO Lorri Jean has a conversation about marriage equality and Prop 8 with a voter in South L.A. Not all of these conversations end up with the person we’re talking to saying that they’ll vote on our side next time — but this one did.

Check out a typical VFE Canvass. This was shot by EQCA’s Mike Ai at VFE’s canvass with Equality California and the Jordan/Rustin Coalition in South L.A. on July 11, 2009. Thanks to Holy Faith Episcopal Church in Inglewood for allowing us to use their facilities for our canvass training!

Here’s a conversation between a VFE canvasser, Laura, and a woman who voted Yes on Prop 8, at her doorstep in Pasadena, California. Laura tells the voter her story, about how Prop 8 has affected her personally, and by the end of the conversation, the voter says she will vote in favor of marriage for gay and lesbian couples the next time at the ballot.

In this conversation, Dave talks with Ed, a ninety-something gentleman who voted Yes on Prop 8, while Ed is sitting in his car. We’re not able to change everyone’s mind that we talk to, but we are also keenly interested to learn the reasons why people say they voted Yes on 8, and in peeling away the onion layers of their opposition to marriage equality.

Kathy Griffin devoted an entire episode of her Emmy-winning show on Bravo, “My Life on the D-List,” to Prop 8 and encouraging activism in California. She even came canvassing with Vote for Equality, and persuaded a ninety-year-old voter to reconsider her ‘Yes’ vote on Prop 8.
